American tennis legend Pete Sampras turned 50 on Thursday, August 12.

Sampras won 14 Grand Slams in his career and 64 ATP titles in total. He held the record for the most Grand Slam titles when he won his final one at the 2002 US Open.

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (all 20) have since passed Sampras in the Grand Slam tally.

Sampras was only 31 when he stopped playing professionally and today will perhaps rue not playing for a few more years.

Nevertheless, at the time of his retirement it was largely accepted that it would be incredibly difficult for any player to ever catch Sampras’ 14 majors.

He was an attacking-minded player and the last serve and volley ace to win a Grand Slam.

Sampras will go down as an all-time great and perhaps the best “clutch” player ever under pressure.

He won seven Wimbledon crowns, five US Open Championships and two Australian Open titles.
